When a white mob murdered her friend Thomas Moss and his two partners in 1892, Wells-Barnett stopped accepting the public explanation for lynching. The People’s Grocery had drawn customers away from a white-owned store. That was the offence.
So she gathered the evidence: names, dates, places, the charges, the newspaper reports, the official statements. Then she set the story America told itself against the record. Of the 728 lynchings she tabulated, only one-third of the victims had even been accused of the crime used to justify the killings.
This volume brings together her four anti-lynching pamphlets, complete and unabridged, in the order she published them.
